To help prevent oral conditions such as gum disease and excessive plaque buildup, most dentists recommend the scaling and root planing, which is also referred to as “deep cleaning.” Here at Neu Family Dental, we believe that scaling and root planing is one of the best ways to clean and preserve your teeth. Our goal is to do everything we can to help improve, repair and maintain all of our patient’s oral health. However, we feel that it is just as important to educate our patients on the oral conditions they have and the treatment procedures we recommend. This way, they can make informed choices about their oral health care, allowing them to feel more comfortable about the procedures we perform. Understanding Scaling and Root PlaningScaling is a dental cleaning procedure that aims to remove the plaques on your teeth below your gum line. The root planing involves sometimes requires removing a small bit of the dentine that is drenched with toxins or microorganism on the surfaces of the roots, which triggers inflammation. This procedure is termed as deep cleaning, and it goes beyond the general cleaning that you undertake every six months. We scrape the plaque off of your tooth using a tool called a dental scaler and curette. We gently slide this tool under your gum line and begin to remove the plaque and tartar. While we are removing the plaque and tartar, we will periodically spray a gentle stream of water across the teeth to help rinse the debris from the gum line. Next, we perform the root planing, which will reach deeper into the gum line, near the root of the tooth. The cleaning is done just like the scaling. The procedure sometimes requires local anesthesia, especially if your gum tissue is deemed overly sensitive. We may also recommend the use of desensitizing paste for you to use before and after the cleaning. Depending on the severity of the buildup or the number of teeth that need to be cleaned, the procedure may need to be broken up between multiple visits. The Need for Scaling and Root PlaningScaling and root planing is important to your overall oral health. It is virtually impossible to remove the plaque and tartar that finds its way below the gum line, at home. By avoiding this deep cleaning, you are increasing the risk of developing gum inflammation, gum disease, and other, more serious oral conditions. The bacteria can also damage your gum tissue and begin to attack the bone, which to bone loss and a general weakening of the jaw itself. This can lead to changes in your facial appearance as well as hinder your ability to eat properly. It can also lead to chronic headaches, and jaw pain that some people assume is the onset of TMD.
