Tooth Extractions

Tooth extraction is not something most people would classify as pleasant. In fact, it is something that most people dread. While good oral hygiene can help minimize the risk or need for a tooth extraction, there are situations where they are necessary, regardless of your oral health care routine. However, just because you need to have a tooth removed, doesn’t mean that you should just throw caution to the wind. Sometimes, a tooth extraction can be a complicated procedure, which is why you want the professionals at Neu Family Dental by your side. We will do everything can you make sure you are as comfortable as possible and that the procedure goes smoothly.

What Is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from a patient’s mouth, ensuring that it is dislodged from the bone itself. A tooth might need to be removed for some reasons, including, but not limited to:
•  Infection.
•  Severe decay.
•  Periodontal or gum disease.
•  Overcrowding
•  Irreparable damage.

While we will always do whatever we can to save a tooth, sometimes, it’s just not possible. In some instances, extraction is not only recommended but is required. This is to ensure your oral and overall health, as infections and bacteria can enter the bloodstream and attack other parts of the body, such as the heart.

Two Types of Tooth Extraction

Tooth extractions are divided into two specific types, namely the surgical tooth extraction and the simple extraction. A simple tooth extraction is a straightforward procedure where a tooth can easily be reached and pulled out. On the other hand, a surgical tooth extraction is typically far more complicated. This is when the tooth must be removed through incisions in the gums to get the tooth out. This type of procedure comes when a tooth has broken off around the gum line, is too brittle to pull out easily, or is infected. Sometimes, your tooth will need to be sectioned to remove it, which is cutting or breaking the tooth into sections so that it comes out easier.

The Process of Tooth Extraction

To undergo an extraction, we will look at the parts of your mouth that surround the tooth that is being extracted. We want to make sure we see all the structures around the tooth, so we can safely and efficiently remove your tooth. We will discuss your medical history at this point, and talk with you about the different sedation options you have. We will inject the area around the tooth with numbing agents, so you feel no pain. It is our goal to make sure extractions are painless for our patients. If you notice anything other than pressure, let us know, and we can adjust how numb the area is.

We then grab the tooth and slowly loosen it from its socket. If any incisions are made, we will suture them after the extraction is complete. Once the tooth is visible, we will then pull it out and clean up the socket. Following the extraction, we will provide you with a list of instructions. Follow these carefully so that you can ensure the best possible healing. Make sure to ask us any questions you have along the way.
