Top 3 Mistakes Most Adults Make When Brushing

Top 3 Mistakes Most Adults Make When BrushingOne of the keys to healthy teeth and gums is brushing regularly. While that sounds like something very simple, the facts show otherwise. It is not enough to brush regularly. You also need to make sure you are doing the right things.

While you don't always need perfection when it comes to brushing your teeth there are some mistakes people make that can lead to problems. Three mistakes are very common and are easy to correct.

The Three Mistakes
The three biggest mistakes can fall into a few categories, but they are all related. The mistakes involve the technique of brushing, the tools for brushing and the habit of brushing.

•  Poor Brushing Technique - Some people try to brush their teeth as quickly as they can, so they can move on to the next thing in their busy life. We recommend that you brush for at least two minutes. There are many ways to do this. Children are taught to hum the song that can last 2 minutes. Adults can do the same thing or turn to a timer. A second problem with technique is brushing too hard. It is possible to damage the gums if you use too much force while brushing.
•  Brushing Tools - Like anything, one of the keys to brushing is having the right tools. We recommend a soft to medium bristle toothbrush. It is also good to use a fluoride toothpaste. Tooth brushes do not last forever. Get a new one every 6 months to make sure they are not a problem. Other tools to include in your brushing habits include floss and an anti-bacterial rinse.
•  Brushing your teeth is a habit that starts when your first teeth emerge and needs to continue until you die. We recommend brushing at least twice a day. We also suggest that you wait 15 minutes after eating before brushing. Avoid making excuses to avoid this important habit.

Healthy teeth and gums are the result of good oral hygiene habits. While many have good intentions when it comes to brushing their teeth, that does not mean they are perfect. Learning the possible mistakes is a good way to avoid making them.
