Can I Eat All of the Same Foods if I Have Dentures?

While there are simple answers, eating while wearing dentures can be split into two categories: eating right after you get dentures and eating once your mouth has adjusted to wearing dentures. Here are some guidelines you can go by while eating with dentures.

Why Dentures?

Dentures replace missing teeth. They are usually used for people who have lost all of their teeth in both jaws or all of their teeth in one jaw, and they are usually called partial dentures. Most dentures are made from a combination of porcelain for prosthetic teeth and acrylic for the tooth base, but some are made of acrylic only because they are cheaper, lighter, and stronger than porcelain dentures. Most dentures adhere to your gums with denture adhesive, although other types of dentures rely on suction to adhere to your gums. Dentures allow you to resume your life with confidence rather than worry about your missing teeth.

What Should I Eat Right After I Get Dentures?

When you first get your dentures, you will want to eat a soft diet so your mouth can get used to dentures. Many people experience soreness or pain when they first get dentures because their gums need time to adjust to them. Eating soft foods, whether warm or cold, will help your mouth get used to your new teeth. You also want to avoid sticky foods when you first get dentures so that you are not spending huge blocks of time cleaning sticky food off your dentures.

What Can I Eat Later?

Once your mouth gets used to dentures, you can eat whatever you want, with some qualifications. If you love an occasional steak or other difficult-to-chew foods, you will want to cut them into small pieces before you try chewing them. Also, be careful with candy, nuts, and other hard foods because although your dentures are strong, they might crack or break.
