Porcelain Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns at Neu Family DentalYour teeth are the hardest substance in your body. They are exceptionally strong and stand up to much daily use. However, while they are very hard, they are not immune to damage. Teeth can be affected by damage due to facial or oral trauma; you may bite down on something hard, your tooth decay may erode them. No matter what the source of damage, it is important to have these teeth treated quickly. Putting off treatment for damaged teeth can lead to further damage, infections, and even tooth loss. Crowns are a common treatment for tooth damage. At Neu Family Dental, we offer porcelain crowns.

What Is a Crown?

When your teeth are damaged, they are put at risk. Not only can further damage occur, but bacteria can also enter the interior of the affected teeth and cause a painful infection. A crown is a restoration designed to protect the tooth from these issues. It is a cap designed to look like the crown of your natural tooth, and it covers over the entire visible structure of the damaged tooth. In protecting the tooth, they prevent serious issues from occurring and prevent the need for a tooth extraction.

Why Porcelain?

Crowns can be made out of many different materials, including metal, porcelain fused to metal, and solid porcelain. At Neu Family Dental, our crowns are completely porcelain. Metal crowns are the strongest, but they are silver or gold in color, making them obvious. Porcelain fused to metal crowns combine the strength of metal with the aesthetics of porcelain, but a metal line often shows through at the bottom of the crown near the gumline. Porcelain crowns are the most aesthetic. They may not be as strong as metal, but they certainly are not the delicate porcelain associated with fancy plates. Porcelain crowns are fairly strong and able to stand up to normal daily use. With proper care, these crowns can last many years.

Other Benefits of Crowns

Aesthetics are not the only benefit of our porcelain crowns. Other benefits include:
•  Protecting teeth from further damage.
•  Protecting the teeth from bacterial invasion.
•  Strengthening weakened teeth, including those that have been compromised by decay.
•  Avoiding the need for a tooth extraction, and therefore replacement.
•  Protecting a tooth following a root canal.
•  Anchoring bridges in place.
•  Topping dental implants to replace missing teeth.
•  Restoring confidence.

Crown Placement

The process for getting your porcelain crown typically takes two visits. During your first visit, the affected tooth is prepared. Done under a local anesthetic, this process involves removing some of the enamel from the tooth to reduce it in size. Doing this is essential to ensure a comfortable, natural fit. After the tooth is prepared, an impression is taken. We send the impression to a dental lab, where the crown will be designed to fit perfectly in your mouth and created. It can take a couple of weeks for the crown to be completed and sent back, so a temporary crown is placed while you wait. Once your crown is ready, you return for your second appointment. At this visit, we check the crown for an appropriate fit, feel, and color, and cement it into place. When the procedure is complete, it will be impossible to tell the difference between the restoration and your real teeth.

Porcelain crowns not only protect damaged teeth, but they also restore the appearance of your smile. No one will be able to tell the difference between your crown and your natural teeth. Call Neu Family Dental today for more information and to schedule your consultation at (224) 484-0227.
